The government has decided to purchase a large quantity of rice bran oil to meet the daily needs of low-income people at subsidized prices. This edible oil will be distributed under the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) Family Card Program. The total cost of the government to purchase 18 million liters of oil will be Tk 305.56 million.
The purchase proposal was approved in an important meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement on Wednesday (March 11). The meeting held in Agargaon in the capital was presided over by the convener of the committee and Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury. After the meeting, it was informed that this oil is being procured locally through an open tender system, ensuring transparency.

Two separate proposals were raised by the Ministry of Commerce in the meeting. In the first proposal, the issue of purchasing 8 million liters of rice bran oil in 1 lot was finalized. The total cost of the government to purchase this lot of oil will be Tk 135.15 million. After screening and selecting 11 companies through an open tender, four companies have been awarded work orders.
Among the companies that have received work orders, 2 million liters of oil will be purchased from Majumdar Bran Oil Mills Limited in Jessore. The price of oil per liter for this company has been set at 169 taka 75 paisa. Oil will also be collected from Green Oil and Poultry Feed Industry and Tamim Agro Industries in Dhaka at the same price and quantity. Apart from this, another 2 million liters of oil will be purchased from Pradhan Oil Mills Limited in Gaibandha at the lowest price of 167 taka 50 paisa per liter.
On the other hand, the second proposal of the Ministry of Commerce has approved the purchase of 10 million liters of rice bran oil through 5 lots. The cost of this phase has been set at 170 crore 41 lakh 80 thousand taka. Although 11 companies submitted tenders in these lots as well, in the end, the five lowest bidders were selected. Two million liters of oil will be collected from each institution.

At this stage, oil is being purchased from Majumdar Bran Oil Mills in Jessore at a price of 170 taka 75 paisa per liter. In addition, it has been decided to collect oil from Majumdar Products Limited, Tamim Agro Industries, and Green Oil and Poultry Feed Industry in Dhaka at a price of 170 taka 25 paisa to 170 taka 40 paisa per liter.
As a result of this initiative of the government, the common people holding family cards through TCB will get the opportunity to buy nutritious rice bran oil at a much more affordable price than in the market. The process of collecting this oil will be completed very soon, and it will be delivered to the common people through TCB dealers across the country, according to the concerned sources.
